9' ft Nimble 34 Nimble 1992

The Nimble 34 is a Ted Brewer designed twin diesel engine trawler that features two staterooms but with a very unique deck arrangement. The pilothouse houses the salon/galley/dinette area forward while aft is a berthing area with a double berth and enclosed head. Forward of the pilothouse is a v-berth with head. The unique part is that there is a small cockpit forward of the pilothouse and then another companionway into the forward berth area. Power is provided by a pair of 150hp Cummins diesels which gives the boat a 14 knot cruise and 19 knot maximum speed. Full specs and additional photos are on-line. Model History

Nimble Marine constructed the 34 Nimble from plans drawn by the well known yacht designer, Ted Brewer. This boat is hull #1 and to the best of our knowledge, was a one-off boat from Nimble. That is not to say that this is the only example of this Brewer design. Currently, Ted Brewer offers the design of a 34' Swagman (design #227)which is a sister design to the 34' Nimble. The Swagman has had a number of examples built by various yards. Distinctive, unique, innovative are all apt descriptions of this one of a kind boat.
Construction

The construction of this pocket cruiser is of the highest order. The hull is laid-up with E-glass unidirectional fiberglass cloth, modified polyester resin and Airex coring material. The hull is solid glass below the waterline while above, the hull sides are cored with Airex. The hull is stiffened by FRP longitudinal stringers. The deck is constructed in a similar fashion with balsa and plywood used as coring materials in high stress areas. The hull/deck joint has an inward turning flange that is thru-bolted every 4" with 1/4" fasteners and sealed with 3M 5200.
Vessel Walk Thru

"Journey" has one of the most unique layouts you are likely to come across. The design features two cockpits, a traditional one aft and an untraditional one just forward of the pilothouse/salon area. It is this forward cockpit that defines the boat's interior arrangement. Entering the boat from the aft cockpit, you descend 3 steps into the aft berth area. There is a double berth off to port while opposite, on starboard, there is a large hanging locker aft and a head with separate stall shower forward. Moving forward and up 3 steps into the salon/galley/lower helm area, you will find and L-shaped settee with dinette table running fore and aft on the port side, a small L-shaped galley aft to starboard and the lower helm forward on starboard. Engine access is via 3 en-sole removable hatches and is quite good. Now, to get to the forward cabin, you exit the area through a centerline door which takes you out on deck and into the forward cockpit. At the front of the cockpit is another companionway into the forward berth. You enter the cabin and down a short 4 step ladder. Forward is a bench seat with storage area beneath. (This area was designed to house a toilet, but one was never installed.) At the aft end and behind the removable ladder, there is a roomy transverse double berth with storage at either end and beneath. There is a rode access hatch on the forward bulkhead.
Hull Design

The Nimble was designed by the renowned navel architect Ted Brewer. The design of the hull is quite traditional, she is semi-displacement with a hard chine convex bottom and deep keel giving good protection to the running gear.

The Nimbles deck arrangement is as practical as can be perfectly suited for short handed cruising. The forward cockpit and walk around up to the bow is ideal for taking family and friends out for an afternoon cruise in security and comfort. Water access is a breeze with the cockpit transom door out onto swim platform with ladder. Diving, a little fishing or maybe just a bit of exploring in a dinghy or kayak, the stern of the Nimble is a well thought out as the rest of the boat.
