Vessel’s hull has been set up in Baglietto, Varazze ’shipyard, between 1942 and 1943. During and just after the war, pleasure navigation was facing an important crisis and Baglietto shipyard decided to set up some fishing boats and three military hulls, nearly twins, meant to minesweeper, in order to avoid the dismissal of their plurispecialised workers. Right after, for unknown international political reasons the Military Navy suddenly decided to urgently build up in Baglietto’s shipyard 4 warship of the length of 50 mt each. For this period they were very modern and it was unknown, for military reasons, why they were built for, but they were probably meant to the interception of enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea. The ships were sold because of the urgency of clearing the building shipyard. Mr Fassio, at the time ship owner of about 30 merchant ships, had been very interested in buying one of those hulls, in order to transform it, providing proper equipment, into a private sailboat. He addressed himself to one of the most popular naval architects of the period, the British J. Laurent Giles who personally cured the design aspect and the management of work, that terminated in Genoa, in Sturla’s shipyard. A few years later it was launched with the name of Chrisor, in Greek mythology it was the name of the first sailor who put in the sea some lopped tree-treks in order to form a rudimentary hull by which Chrysor has navigated for the very first time in the world. After about 20 years Fassio Family sold the boat in England and nobody knew anything about it for a long time. The first time we saw it, it was berthed in La Maddalena’s port ( north Sardinia near Porto Cervo), there it was, like an old woman, submitted to the oblivion, looking like it had been waiting too long for some loving care to take it back to the sea. A stately stern and an impressive bow didn’t compromise its elegant design. The scaled off paint and the scratched wood make one think of an adventurous past. It was love at first sight. My cousin and I, only twenty years old, decided to spend all the money we earned working as sailor men on fishing boats or commanders in small passengers ferryboats. Although the initial cost was quite affordable, we had to sign so many bills of exchange in order to pay it. Considering the horrible condition of the boat, that seemed more like a derelict ship, and the totally different kind of boat we were used to see in Cala Gonone, it was like a wager to us. After a first mending the boat has acquired an acceptable aspect, giving us the possibility to use it like a charter. We navigated all Sardinia’ seas. Visiting several ports and shipyards we have discovered different documents and pictures of the vessel. We have personally heard some testimony of people that we were lucky to meet and that we are still in contact with; the shipowner Fassio or Mr Angelo, an old carpenter from Genoa who collaborated to the construction of the boat, or Mr Del Carlo, owner of the homonym shipyard in which the vessel has been refurbished. The discovery of those stories and other interesting material are the result of years spent researching them. Although our original plans faded in a fire in Sturla’s shipyard, we wanted to use this material during the refurbishment in order to keep the design of boat as close as possible to the original one. At the end of the day, we are happy that we waited 10 years to see the vessel completely refurbished. We have used exceptional material that we have found during my research in order to improve the refurbishment works. We have visited all the shipyards in north and south Italy, but when we came across the one in Viareggio we new that was our place. We decided that we were personally going to manage all the works and cure the design. It was up to carpenters and technicians to achieve our ideas. In those 9 months we faced many problems, we spent so much time travelling abroad in order to look for some particular parts and we spent last period working night and day in the shipyard. The emotion we felt when the vessel went back to the sea was indescribable. Reason for selling: After a lot of years I want change work and I want stay with my family.
